Gingival contouring, also known as gum contouring, is a treatment which can improve the overall look of a patient’s teeth and gums. Dentists primarily use it in cases where a patient has a “gummy” smile — when the gums cover the base of the teeth, making them appear shorter.
The gingival contouring procedure starts with a local anaesthetic so that the gum area is completely numb. The dentist then uses a scalpel or laser to trim away excess gum tissue before reshaping the remaining tissue. Sometimes, your dentist may need to remove some of the underlying bone as well.
