If you lose any of your teeth and do not have a replacement fitted, the bone that once surrounded the teeth will begin to deteriorate.

You may also experience bone loss if you have periodontal disease, a severe infection of the gums. Bone loss results in sagging facial features, giving you a more aged appearance, and could also result in complications if you decide to replace missing teeth later in life.

Your dentist can use bone grafting to replace this lost tissue. A bone graft is a minor surgical procedure your dentist can perform at the practice.

First, they will make an incision in your gum to gain access to the bone underneath. The dentist will then insert a grafting material, and over time, your body will begin to generate new bone cells around the graft, increasing your jaw’s bone density.

If you would like dental implants, but you do not have the required bone density, or if your teeth become loose because of periodontal disease, your dentist will likely recommend a bone graft procedure.

At Absolute Dental, we offer you the choice of a local anaesthetic or IV sedation to make sure the bone grating process is as comfortable as possible. You can expect some discomfort in the area following the procedure, but you can manage it with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications.
